Below are some tips for handling common emergencies. However, if you’re experiencing an urgent medical emergency, please dial 9-1-1 or go to the nearest emergency room.
Soreness from Braces or Aligners
It's common to experience some soreness for a few days. This discomfort usually lasts about a week. To ease the soreness, stick to soft foods, rinse with warm salt water (1 tsp. of salt dissolved in 8 oz. of warm water), and take Tylenol if needed (we recommend avoiding Advil).
Loose Bracket or Band
If a bracket or band is still attached to the wire, leave it in place and cover it with wax to avoid irritation. If it's completely detached, bring it with you to your next appointment.
Lost Separator
It’s common for separators to come loose or fall out during treatment. Don’t stress about losing one, but please contact our office to determine whether it needs to be replaced.
Lost Tie Wire (O-Ring)
If the small rubber O-ring comes off your braces, don’t worry — it can usually wait until your next appointment for replacement.
Loose Appliance
If your appliance becomes loose or broken, give us a call.
Wire Irritations
Poking Wire
If a wire is poking or irritating your cheek, cover it with wax to protect the area. You can also trim the wire using clean nail clippers. Before trimming, be sure to wrap the area with tissue or gauze to catch the wire piece.
Wire Out of the Tube
If the wire is sticking out and poking your gums or cheek, gently use tweezers to reinsert it into the tube or bend it away from your gums. Apply wax to ease any discomfort.
